Top 10 Detox Foods

As 2007 swings into gear, there's no better time to give your body a healthy, fresh start than now! Plus if you're thinking about lowering your weight - and your RealAge "eating clean" is a great first step. Add these 10 foods to your grocery cart and you'll get three terrific benefits:

1. Lots of super-healthy liquids to flush out the body while pouring in nutrients.
2. Fiber to keep your GI tract fit.
3. Foods that energize cleansing enzymes in the liver, your body's built-in detox center.

The top 10:
1. Green leafy vegetables. Eat them raw, throw them into a broth, add them to juices. Their chlorophyll helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides) and is an all-round liver protector.

2. Lemons. You need to keep the fluids flowing to wash out the body and fresh lemonade is ideal. Its vitamin C - considered the detox vitamin - helps convert toxins into a water - soluble form that?s easily flushed away.

3. Watercress. Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps move things through your system. And cress is rich in minerals too.

4. Garlic. Add it to everything - salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes that help filter out junk.

5. Green tea. This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more fluids into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity.

6. Broccoli sprouts. Get 'em at your health-food store. They pack 20 to 50 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable.

7. Sesame seeds. They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that?s a staple of Asian cooking.

8. Cabbage. There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver; this potent veggie helps activate both of them. Coleslaw, anyone?

9. Psyllium. A plant that?s rich in soluble fiber, like oat bran, but more versatile. It mops up toxins (cholesterol too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast.

10. Fruits, fruits, fruits. They're full of almost all the good things above - vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and all kinds of antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, fresh berries, or a perfect pear.

HERBAL DETOX

The body's immune system is the first line of defense against almost all infections and diseases. If your body has a strong immune system you will be less prone to infection. The immune system is made up of a vast system of lymphatic channels and lymph nodes. Detoxing your body with the right herbs and supplements is an all natural way of removing unwanted toxins and heavy metals from the lymphatic system improving the overall immune system.

Herbs can be extremely valuable to a personal detoxification program. Some important herbs to consider in the process of detoxification include the following:

- Psyllium seed is a lubricating mucilaginous fiber used as a gentle bulking and laxative agent.
Its benefits, however, go beyond a single action, as psyllium is adaptogenic, generally
supporting healthy bowel function and used in connection with conditions ranging from
diarrhea to irritable bowel syndrome. Psyllium is a particularly good choice for detoxification,
as the gelatinous substance produced through soaking attracts and absorbs toxins.

- Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) can be used as a natural laxative as well, alone, or in
conjunction with psyllium. It is safe for long-term use and strengthens the muscles of the
colon.

- Milk thistle. The liver is the body's foremost organ for detoxification. Milk thistle seed is
commonly used to improve liver function by stimulating protein synthesis. It is also a
hepatoprotective (liver protector) agent. Milk thistle is considered a natural antioxidant,
helping to detoxify a wide range of potentially damaging contaminants, including drugs,
alcohol, and a wide variety of chemicals.

- Nettle (Urtica dioica) has detoxifying properties that extend beyond the urinary system, but
its diuretic action makes it particularly effective in this area. Overuse of nettle is not a concern
as with juniper. Though the nettle root has the primary diuretic properties, all parts of the
plant facilitate cleansing.

- Burdock root and seed (Arctium lappa) is similar to nettle in its cleansing and mild diuretic
actions, but it is stronger in its effect. Accumulations of heavy metals within the body can be
diminished with the aid of burdock.

- Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) helps to cleanse and strengthen the liver. Dandelion root
has a cleansing action that helps to remove waste from the liver and gallbladder. It works on
the kidneys as well, and is a good choice to use in conjunction with burdock root as well as milk
thistle.

Diet Detox

What Is a Detox Diet?

The people who support detox diets say that because of emotional stress or dehydration, toxins don't leave our bodies properly during the elimination of waste. Instead, they believe toxins hang around in our digestive, lymph, and gastrointestinal systems as well as in our skin and hair. According to proponents of detox diets, these toxins can cause all kinds of problems, like tiredness, headaches, nausea, and acne.

So the basic idea behind detox diets is to temporarily give up certain kinds of foods that are thought to contain toxins. The idea is to purify and purge your body of all the "bad" stuff. Although the diets vary, most of them involve some version of a fast, that is, giving up food for a couple of days, and then gradually reintroducing certain foods into your diet.
Many of these diets also encourage you to undergo colonic irrigation, otherwise known as an enema (an enema flushes out your rectum and colon using water), which is designed to "clean out" your colon. Still others recommend that you take herbal supplements to help the "purification" process.

There are tons of detox diets out there. Typically they involve 1 or 2 days on a completely liquid diet and another 4 or 5 days adding brown rice, fruit, and steamed vegetables (all organic) to the diet. After a week of eating only these foods, you gradually reintroduce other foods - except for red meat, wheat, sugar, eggs, and all prepackaged or junk foods - into your diet.

People on detox diets are also encouraged to chew their food thoroughly, to drink very little while eating, and to relax prior to each meal (although it seems a stretch to call a glass of lemon water a meal!).

Lots of claims are made about what a detox diet can do for you, from preventing and curing disease to giving you more energy to making you more focused and clear-headed. Of course, anyone who goes on a low-fat, high-fiber diet is probably going to feel more healthy, but proponents of detox diets claim that this is because of the elimination of toxins, as opposed to carrying around less excess weight or having a healthier heart. However, there's no scientific proof that these diets help rid the body of toxins faster or that the elimination of toxins will make you a healthier, more energetic person.

What Should You Watch Out For?

If detox diets still appeal to you, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. For starters, detox diets are intended for short-term purposes only. (People are usually encouraged to go on fasts like this at specific times during the year, such as at the end of a season.) And these diets are usually recommended not to help people lose weight, but to help clean out their systems.

Because normal teenagers need lots of good nutrition, with high calories and protein to support the teenage growth and development period, diets that involve fasting and severe restriction of food are not a good idea. For teens who are involved in sports and physical activities that require ample food, fasting does not provide enough fuel to support these activities. For these reasons, detox diets can be especially risky for teenagers.

It's not recommended that people with diabetes, low blood sugar, or eating disorders go on detox diets.
You should also know that this type of diet can be addicting - some people really like purging. That's because there's a certain feeling that comes from going without food or having an enema - almost like the high other people get from nicotine or alcohol. This purification buzz can become a dangerous addiction that leads to health problems, including serious eating disorders and even death.

In addition, many of the supplements called for by these diets are actually laxatives, which are designed to make you go to the bathroom more often. These types of supplements are never a good idea because they can cause dehydration, mineral imbalances, and problems with your digestive system.

Finally, if you fast for several days, you may drop pounds but most of it will be water and some of it may be muscle, which will make you look thin and flabby, rather than tight and toned. Fasting for longer periods can also slow down your metabolism, making it harder to keep the weight off or to lose weight later.

We're not going to tell you that eating lots of veggies and fiber and drinking lots of water is a bad idea. But you also need to make sure you're getting all of the nutrients you need, including protein from lean meats, eggs, beans, or peas and calcium from low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt. You definitely shouldn't start a detox diet or stop eating from any major food group without talking to your doctor or a registered dietitian.

Your body is designed to purify itself. Your liver and kidneys will do the job they're supposed to do if you eat a healthy diet that includes fiber, fruits, veggies, and plenty of water. If you're feeling tired or run down, or if you're concerned that you're overweight, talk with a doctor who can help you determine the cause and recommend ways to address the problem.

Detoxification and The Detox Diet:
An Important Healing Process

by Elson M. Haas, M.D. Copyright © 1999

The simplest way to understand symptoms and disease integrates Western linear thinking, Chinese medicine and its philosophy of yin and yang, and the naturopathic approach to health and illness. Problems in the body (and mind) often arise from either DEFICIENCY, where we are not acquiring sufficient necessary nutrients to meet our needs and body functions--and CONGESTION, where we are having excessive intake, both from reduced eliminative functions and the overconsumption of foods or non-food substances, such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, refined sugar and food chemicals.

People who are deficient may experience such problems as fatigue, coldness, hair loss or dry skin, and they need to be nourished with wholesome foods to aid healing. Congestive problems, however, are more common in Western, industrialized civilizations. Many of our acute and chronic medical diseases and dilemmas result from the clogging of our tissues and tubes, and the suffocating of our cells and vital energy. Colds and flus to cancer and cardiovascular diseases, arthritis and allergies are all examples of congestive disorders.

These medical problems may be prevented or treated at least in part and often dramatically by embarking on a process of cleansing and detoxification. The incorporation of dietary changes, including consumption of more fresh fruits, vegetables and water while reducing animal fats and proteins and eliminating any damaging substance abuses is the beginning of the rejuvenation process for the human body. This was discovered long ago and is still true today even though medical science may make light of it in deference to the quick solution to major diseases.

I consider the cleansing/fasting/detoxification process (they are different degrees of the same process of reduced toxin intake and enhanced toxin elimination) to be the missing link in Western nutrition and a key to the health and vitality of our civilization. In my twenty five years of medical practice in which I have utilized extensively various detox and healing/rejuvenation practices for both myself and literally thousands of patients, I can tell you that I truly believe that cleansing and detoxification is virtually one of the most powerful healing (real healing of ailments and not just suppression of symptoms) therapies I have seen.

I have written extensively about detoxification, as can be seen in the last section of my 1100-page Staying Healthy With Nutrition book and which is the focus of my new book, The Detox Diet: The How-to and When-to Guide For Clearing Your Body of Toxic Substances, wherein I discuss both the medical and health factors of the cleansing process. The basics of The Detox Diet follow here to give you the general ideas of what it is involved.

In truth, what I attempt to do in my writing and practice, is to place your health and that of your family back into your hands, because so much of it is up to you. It really matters how you live--what you do and what you eat, and what you think and feel. Take hold and do what you can to be vital and healthy. It is really worth it! Be Well.

THE DETOX DIET

SPECIAL GUIDELINES for THE DETOX DIET
:

1. Chew your food very well and take enough time when you eat.
2. Relax a few minutes before and after your meal.
3. Eat in a comfortable sitting position.
4. Eat primarily steamed fresh vegetables and some fresh greens.
5. Take only herbal teas after dinner.

THE DETOX DIET MENU PLAN

Morning: (upon arising): Two glasses of water (filtered, spring, or reverse osmosis), one glass
with half a lemon squeezed into it.

Breakfast: One piece of fresh fruit (at room temp), such as apple, pear, banana, grapes, or
citrus. Chew well, mixing each bite with saliva.

15-30 minutes later: One bowl of cooked whole grains -- specifically millet, brown rice, amaranth, quinoa, raw buckwheat, or buckwheat. Flavoring can be two tablespoons of fruit juice for a sweeter breakfast taste, or use the "better butter" mixture mentioned below with a little salt or tamari for a deeper flavor.

Lunch: (Noon-1 P.M.) One-two medium bowls of steamed vegetables; use a variety, including
roots, stems, and greens -- e.g. potatoes or yams, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower,
carrots, beets, asparagus, kale, chard, and cabbage. CHEW WELL !

Dinner: (5-6 P.M.) Same as Lunch

Seasoning: Butter/canola oil mixture. Make this "better butter" by mixing a half cup of cold-
pressed canola oil (or olive or flaxseed oils) into a soft (room temperature) half-
pound of butter; then place in dish and refrigerate. Use about one teaspoon per
meal or a maximum of 3 teaspoons daily.

11 A.M. & 3 P.M. One-two cups veggie water, saved from steamed vegetables. Add a little sea salt or kelp and drink slowly, mixing each mouthful with saliva.

Evening: Herbal teas only -- e.g. peppermint, camomile, pau d'arco, or blends.

NOTE: You may feel a little weak or have a few symptoms the first couple of days; this will pass. Clarity and feeling good should appear by day 3 or 4, if not before. If during this diet, you start to feel weak or hungry, assess your water intake and elimination; if needed, you can eat a small portion of protein food (3-4 ounces) in the mid-afternoon. This could be fish; free-range, organic chicken; or some beans, such as lentils, garbanzos, mung, or black beans.

SOG3- DETOX
Super Organic G-3

Did you know that the average person contains 5 to 25 pounds of waste build up in their colon? This "build up" leads to bacteria and toxins that contaminate our system causing common sicknesses and diseases. Approximately 90% of all disease and discomfort is related to an unclean colon. Internal cleansing is essential for a healthy body and to stay young and beautiful.

SOG-3 is rich in natural fiber. It is capable of expanding 5 to 8 times from its original size after consumption, in addition to produce powerful lipids absorbent, assisting peristalsis, filling up empty spaces in the intestines, and acting as a lubricant, cleanser, and scrapper of extremely toxic stubborn stools built up in the colon over a long period of time to maintain a clean environment in our gastrointestinal system.

Most people, including professional athletes, find that they can thrive on one or more servings of SOG-3 for up to three to six hours, depending on their activity level.

Each serving of SOG-3 has more calcium than milk, more potassium than bananas, more fiber than oatmeal, more friendly bacteria (probiotics) than yogurt, more protein than a half dozen egg whites, and more greens, co-factors, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other phyto-nutrients than a basket of fruits and vegetables, plus omega-3 essential fatty acids and selected herbs (see nutrition facts).

SOG-3 contains virtually every known nutrient and is designed to be hypoallergenic and to have a low glycemic response. It is a blend of the earth’s most potent organic, and all natural foods that have been optimized with the most bio-available and usable nutrients and co-factors in existence, including stabilized probiotics for healthy intestinal function, herbs to enhance major body systems, antioxidants to protect against free radical damage, vitamins and minerals to optimize the naturally occurring vitamin and mineral profile of the foods, amino acids to optimize the naturally occurring amino acid profile of the plant proteins, and a custom enzyme complex to maximize the delivery of nutrients to the body.

TOURMALINE JUEKITAKARA

The New Century Health Promotion Method Toxic Absorbent Through The Sole It Is Very Effective And Marvellous

The negative effect of industrial development has cause the pollution of our living environment ever increasing daily. The hygienic foods and drinks have been threatened to a great extent. However, the awareness and knowledge of human- beings have been uplifted tremendously together with the advancement of science and technology. Therefore, health maintenance has a topic of hot discussion and highly emphasized.

The Japanese medical profession has made a breakthrough in the discovery of discharging the toxin from our body with a kind of vegetarian liquid which is very effective and has been regarded as one of the most welcome health promotion products in this century.

The ingredients of the Juekitakara are simple:
they mainly consist of vegetarian fibers, plant liquid, other supplementary elements and
contain no alcohol. Ingredients include Watermelt Strach - 50%, Wood Vinegar & Bamboo
Vinegar - 40%, Stinking Medical Herb, Loquat Leaf, Vitamin C & Kitchenkitosan - 10%.
Though the ingredients are few, it has great effect.

- WATERMELT STARCH - Fragrance natural calcium(ca) powder and have antiseptic,
aromatheraptic, toxin discharging, skin inflammation improving and cosmetic effect.
- WOODEN VINEGAR - Eliminate bacteria and deodorant effect.
- BAMBOO VINEGAR - Eliminate bacteria and deodorant effect. Combination with wooden
vinegar will generate interactive effects to fortify and stabilize ingredients.
- STINKING MEDICAL HERB - Traditional Phytoncid medical herbs which have skin fit
preventing effect, antidotal effect, analgesic action and cosmetic effect for our preparation.
- WATER SOLUBLE STARCH - Plant fiber benefits to make skin healthy and beautiful.
- LOQUAT LEAF EXTRACT - Moisturizing effect
- VITAMIN C - Whitening effect
- KITCHENKITOSAN - Absorbent effect and prevent skin roughness and enhance immune
system

Juekitakara has two great functions:{
1} To discharge our body toxin
{2} To relieve inflammation and pain.

In its disposal of toxin, it can circulate the blood vessels, activate the blood cells and promoting metabolism. It also strengthens our immunization system, to improve our sleeping quality and make our body full of vitality.
It can help relieve those who are suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, gout, knee-joint pain, back bone pain and other joints pain, to reduce inflammation and aching.

Never Plaster On Any Wound

The Juekitakara's usage is very simple:
Put the smooth surface of the absorbent with words on the center of the sticky paper and then place the paper on the foot sole. Application before sleep is more effective, you can place it on any aching part of your body but not on any open wound. In the morning you can observe the toxin discharging phenomenon. The Juekitakara disposes the toxin through the sole, the original white powder material will turn brownish or dark brown in colour depending on individuals. The powder form material after absorbing in the toxin would turn solid condition.

The absorbent placed on the sole may become damp, once becomes damp the symptoms will disappear. If there is no sign of any damp condition after using the toxin absorbent, especially to those who have chronic diseases and long time under medication, you have to use it more patient.

When the absorbent never show the damp condition anymore, it means that the toxin in your body is almost disposed. However, the toxin may still accumulate owing to our ways of eating and drinking. Therefore, you still have to continue with the usage of Juekitakara once or twice a month in order to eradicate the newly formed toxin to ensure our best condition of health.

To raise our antibody ability and regulate our metabolism, it will cure the illness easily and quickly. Another word, our body should be balanced and can effectively dispose of toxin and absorb nutrients. However, if we only depend on our metabolism to absorb nutrients, it takes a longer time. It's better to use the disposal method to enhance our metabolism mechanism, then our sickness can recuperate in a short period of time.

There are four disposal organs in our body such as liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. They can absorb the required materials as well as to dispose pf them. If they cannot function properly, the toxin would be deposited and create trouble. The Juekitakara toxin absorbent will play the role as the fifth effective disposing organ to discharge all the toxin from our body and the result is marvelous.

The gingivitis sufferers after using the absorbent, the swollen gums subsided and the bleeding was under controlled. The answer to the rate of contamination in our body can be found when blood cells are deposited with the gingivitis sufferers. Using the Juekitakara the pollutants in the body will disappear and plus the improvement of our eating and drinking habits, then you will have an ideal and benign blood cells.

Detox, short for detoxification, in general is the removal of toxic substances from the body. It is one of the functions of the liver and kidneys, but can also be achieved artificially by techniques such as dialysis and (in a very limited number of cases) chelation therapy.
Other less mainstream methods for eliminating toxic substances from the body include the modification of the diet and addition of certain herbs and rituals such as colonic irrigation, juice fasting and sweat lodges. All these methods claim to assist the body's natural detoxification process.

Specific meanings of detoxification or detox:

- A form of drug rehabilitation, used to treat alcoholism or other drug addiction.
The process involves abstinence to clear the drug from the body, accompanied by social and
environmental support during the associated physiological and psychological changes. A non-
drug method for detox from drugs or alcohol is acupuncture detoxification.

- A class of diets whose underlying assumption is that the body accumulates toxins that must
be purged, especially after unhealthy periods such as over-eating during festivals. Toxins, in
this case, refer to toxic substances - often of undefined nature - from foods, the environment
and the body's own wastes. "Detox diet" is a common phrase, as is "I'm on a detox". See
detox diet.

- Forms of complementary medicine that claim to remove such toxins from the body:
for instance, by herbal, electrical or electromagnetic treatments. As the definition of toxins in
this and the previous context has little scientific basis, the validity of such techniques is
questionable. There is no evidence for such accumulation; the liver and kidneys utomatically
detoxify and excrete many toxic materials, including metabolic wastes. Under this theory if
toxins are too rapidly released without being safely eliminated (such as burning fat that
stores toxins) they can pollute the body causing malaise.

- A process by which a substance is made less toxic.
